The Fife Arms, in the village of Braemar in the heart of the Scottish Cairngorms, recently revealed a new bedroom inspired by fashion designer Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel and her connection to the Scottish Highlands, where the fabrics, landscapes and pastimes influenced some of her collections. Chanel first came to Scotland in the 1920s during her romance with Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster. The designer fell in love with the culture of the area, developing a passion for fishing and becoming a renowned fly fisher.

Russell Sage Studio, the interior designer behind Fife Arms, brought to life the elegant new guestroom. Chanel was known for her dislike of doors, often concealing them behind decorative screens in the hopes her guests might forget to leave, so the new “secret” guestroom at the hotel is hidden behind a trompe-l’œil door.

Specially commissioned tweeds in green and burgundy from Linton mill, discovered by Chanel in 1928 with an ongoing working relationship with the house today, feature throughout the room, as well as decorative touches drawn from Chanel’s apartment in Paris, like the wheatsheaf chandelier and Art Deco vanity mirror. The headboard and some furniture are painted in Scottish Chinoiserie with the wallpaper a copy from Rosehall Hall, the Scottish manor house near Lairg, Chanel decorated during her relationship with the Duke.

Warm and romantic, the room also features a walk-in wardrobe, dedicated bar area and freestanding copper bath tucked within an arched niche. The bathroom celebrates the monochrome color palette Chanel used regularly in her work.

The new room takes over The Fife Arms’ former Family Room, relocated and recreated in a dedicated space on the ground floor.
