Swiss International Air Lines will now charge for seat selection in business class. The carrier sent an email to its top-tier passengers informing them of the change.

The “throne seats,” in which passengers have a small table and work surface on either side of them, are one of the most sought-after benefits of the configuration selected by SWISS on its Airbus A330/A340 cross sections. The airline previously blocked access to these seats for regular passengers in order to enable high-tier frequent flyers to select them.

“As a loyal and valued customer, we would like to inform you in advance about the following changes in SWISS Business. With the remodeling of SWISS Business on long-haul routes, we have introduced exclusive single seats that are marked by more space and discretion. Due to the overwhelming demand concerning these “Privacy Seats,” we will be giving our guests the opportunity to reserve these seats for a fee starting at the end of March,” read the email. “As a token of our appreciation, we are delighted to continue offering these seats to you at no charge, as long as they are still available at the time of booking.”

It’s now between $100–200 to select the seats before online check-in and seat selection opens — at which point it’s fair game. Top-tier elite travelers can still select the seat, but not if the buying-up non-elites selected the seat first.
