An annual study put out by dietdetective.com and the Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center ranks airlines on the quality of onboard food.
The study ranks 11 airlines on a scale of one through five stars, with five stars representing the highest score. The survey includes ratings of specific metrics, including health ratings, average calories per meal, comments, cost, nutrition information and more.
In the 2018–2019 study, Alaska Airlines took top honors, with Delta Air Lines, Air Canada and JetBlue following behind. Alaska scored 4.25 and averaged 404 calories per meal. In the last few years, Virgin America took the No. 1 spot. Next up, Delta Air Lines scored 3.7 and averaged 499 calories per meal.
The lowest-ranking airline surveyed, Frontier Airlines scored a dismal 0.85. The survey takers recommend the airline’s trail mix as its healthiest option, but suggest bringing personal food along for the flight.
Other airlines studied include American Airlines, United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Allegiant Air, Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines. The airlines ranked from best to worst in the aforementioned order.
The study’s authors recommend bringing snacks from home or the airport along for the flight. Some suggestions include bottled water, cereal, fruit and salads, energy bars, sandwiches, nuts and whole-wheat crackers.
