Study Reveals British Versus. American Vacation Habits

Jan 31, 2016
Daily

British Airways Holidays recently released a study comparing the ways British and U.S. employees use their vacation days and how this usage affects overall wellbeing.

The survey noted about 40 percent of British full-time employees make use of all their vacation days, while only about 33 percent of U.S. full-time employees did. On average, full-time British employees use about 22 days of vacation per year, with full-time U.S. employees using about 14. This was stated as being due to, according to 42 percent of Americans who still had vacation days at the end of 2015, simply too much work to be completed, and, as 21 percent said, a fear of disappointing their employer. About 23 percent of these individuals believe that this is, in turn, negatively affecting their health.

Comparatively across the United States, Denver residents made the most use of their vacation time, with 60 percent of full-time employees using all of their available days. In contrast, Los Angeles and New York residents lost, on average, six of their available vacation days per year.

While at work, both U.S. and British employees seem to put in the same amount of effort — about six productive hours out of an eight-hour workday. Americans in medical fields typically were more productive for more hours than the average, with employees in sales and marketing falling below the average at slightly above five productive hours per day.

The survey was conducted with 2,045 U.S. respondents and 1,009 U.K respondents.
