A new study from TD Bank finds travelers could more thoroughly prepare for spending while abroad.

According to the study, while 95 percent of travelers plan a budget for international trips, most don’t take their financial prep much further. Forty percent wait to exchange currency abroad, 37 percent overlook expenses in their travel budget and 35 percent do not anticipate credit and debit card fees (even though 78 percent use their credit card while abroad).

“Traveling abroad is an exciting experience but knowing how to handle your finances is important for a smooth trip,” said James Wolanski, managing director, global foreign exchange, TD Securities. “It’s a good idea to have some foreign currency with you before leaving the U.S. to cover immediate expenses such as transportation, food, tips, or local experiences.”

The average international travel budget for a family of three is $5,800, the study found. The majority of the average budget is allotted to food and entertainment, with other major costs attributed to tourist activities and gratuities. Young travelers are most likely to stay within their budget, while 21 percent of baby boomers exceed their budget when traveling. Young travelers are also most likely to choose their travel destination based on cost and monitor foreign exchange rates before traveling.
