Barcelona, Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol

Jul 1, 2012
2012 / July 2012

The artist hangout Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol in Barcelona is made for a day of peaceful shopping, wandering little boutiques and flower shops, sampling treats from cafés and browsing original artwork.

Jumpstart your day at Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boquería, better known as La Boquería. This bustling, famous market sits in the center of Barcelona and is home to the freshest and often most unique produce, meat and seafood in the city. La Boquería was named best market in the world by the World Markets Congress in 2005. Here, international tourists shop alongside local housewives and chefs for the night’s dinner or the moment’s treat.

Use all your senses, especially scent, as you stroll from stand to stand. See the gorgeous flowers and fruit, sample freshly squeezed juices and smoothies, indulge in handmade chocolates and confections, squirm as you spot seafood so fresh it’s still moving and — yes, perhaps — shudder as you wonder how and where that sheep’s head will be plated. Foodies will want to check the Culinary Classroom schedule, featuring classes and gastronomic events.

After all that bustle and movement, take time for quiet reflection at Iglesia Santa Maria del Pi, Plaza del Pi 7. The 14th-century church boasts original Gothic stained-glass windows and stunning architecture.

Next, venture further through Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol in pursuit of artwork to take home with you. Plan the trip for a Saturday to take advantage of the weekend art market, Mercadillo de la Plaça de Sant Josep. Here, meet a dozen or so Catalan artists as they showcase their original works. Styles range from oils to watercolors, so travelers are sure to find something to capture their attention.

After touring the market, peruse the boutiques and shops that make Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol so charming. If your trip includes a child — or a child at heart — take the time to stop by Joguines Monforte, Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol 3. You’ll find quality puzzles, games and toys, including some available only in Spain.

Let your taste buds have some fun by ending your trip at a local café. Head back toward Iglesia del Pi for Taller de Tapas, Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol 9. Order a few small plates and dine alfresco to watch other travelers stroll by; for a more intimate meal, go inside the stone-walled restaurant. Menu options include spinach and prawn omelet, rocket salad with local goat cheese, cured Jabugo ham, seared tuna loin just purchased from La Boquería and more, plus a lengthy wine list.
