As the fall fades and cold weather begins to take hold in North America, it’s only natural to fantasize about traveling to the Southern Hemisphere to escape.

There are plenty of sights to see all over the continent, from the rain forests and Iguazú Falls National Parks in Brazil and Argentina to the mountains of Peru — there are countless reasons get out of the bitter cold and explore. Carnivores, sample some local fare as South America has some of the best beef on the planet or try some locally brewed coffee during your visit.

Consider traveling to Australia — that is, if you’re not afraid of spiders, scorpions, snakes and other wild animals. Australia is home to some incredible landmarks, including the Sydney Opera House, the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru, the sacred Australian rock formation. From city lovers to nature explorers, there is something to see and do. Depending on your location, the toughest part about travel to Australia will be getting there.

If Africa is more to your liking, consider taking a trip to South Africa. The country is loaded with things to do and see, and is far enough away from the equator to give some temperature reprieve. If you enjoy seeing natural structures, visit the Cape of Good Hope or Table Mountain National Park.

No matter where you choose to go, the reprieve from the harsh winter will make the travel worthwhile.
