Six Senses Laamu, in the remote Laamu Atoll of the Maldives, was recently included on TIME Magazine’s prestigious World’s Greatest Places of 2026 list. This list recognizes destinations offering one-of-a-kind experiences, innovations and meaningful impacts around the world.

The hotel is committed to integrating environmental research into the guest experience through a variety of initiatives. Through the Sea Hub for Environmental Learning in Laamu, one of the world’s most ambitious resort-based conservation programs, guests get an inside look at the purpose-built research center as resident NGOs study local marine life and surrounding environment.

With the creation of the Maldives Underwater Initiative (with the help of different NGOs), Six Senses Laamu has played an important part in reef restoration and marine research across the atoll. Recently, scientists added 3 million coral larvae grown in on-site laboratories to the damaged reefs, as well as cloned vulnerable coral species to help support ecosystem recovery.

The resort also works with local conservation companies to support groundbreaking research techniques. With The Manta Trust, the two catalogued more than 150 individual manta rays and monitored pregnant manta rays with the world’s first underwater contactless ultrasound scanner. It also works with the Olive Ridley Project, a leader in sea turtle conservation.

Guests staying at Six Senses Laamu have the opportunity to participate in these scientific initiatives by exploring the laboratories and galleries at SHELL, participating in marine conservation initiatives, diving alongside biologists, and earning diving certifications focused on manta rays and reef ecosystems.
