Singapore Airlines Plans 19-Hour Flight

The world’s longest non-stop commercial flights are set to return to the United States in the future. Singapore Airlines recently announced plans to reinstate flights between Singapore (SIN) and both Newark (EWR) and Los Angeles (LAX) in 2018, following the delivery of a new ultra-long-range variant of Airbus A350 aircraft.

The carrier offered direct service between Singapore and both the New York and Los Angeles areas until 2013, when its A340-500s operating the route were retired. Depending on wind conditions, the Newark–Singapore route takes about 18 to 19 hours, while the Los Angeles route lasts about an hour less.

“Our customers have been asking us to restart non-stop Singapore–U.S. flights and we are pleased that Airbus was able to offer the right aircraft to do so in a commercially viable manner,” said Goh Choon Phong, CEO, Singapore Airlines.

Currently, the longest non-stop scheduled flight is the 17-hour Qantas flight from Dallas (DFW) to Sydney (SYD) with A380 aircraft, but Emirates will soon take the “world’s longest flight” title with the launch of new direct service between Dubai (DXB) and Panama (PTY) in February 2016. Passengers flying the new route will be in the air for an incredible 17 hours and 35 minutes on Boeing 777-200LR aircraft.

Other existing ultra-long-haul routes include Saudia’s service from Los Angeles to Jeddah (JED), lasting about 16 hours and 55 minutes; Delta Air Lines’ flight from Johannesburg (JNB) to Atlanta (ATL), keeping passengers at 35,000 feet for 16 hours and 40 minutes; and Emirates’ 16-hour and 35-minute flight from Dubai to Los Angeles.
