To cater to growing demand, Shanghai’s fast-growing Pudong International Airport added a fourth runway, capable of accommodating the world’s largest passenger and cargo aircraft.
The new addition makes Pudong the first Chinese airport with four runways in operation and grows its capacity to 1,400 daily take-offs and landings.
Pudong International Airport handled more than 50 million passengers last year and is expected to see 80 million passengers by 2020. In order to accommodate the surge, construction launched on a new satellite terminal that will include 105 gates and capacity for 30 million passengers per year.
The airport also plans to develop a new transportation system to allow passengers to travel between terminals.
Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has the most runways of any major commercial airport in the world, with seven, followed by Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, both with six.
