By the end of the next decade, aviation officials plan to close Santa Monica Airport and replace the 227 acres of landing strips and airport property with a park just two miles from the Pacific Ocean.
Beginning in World War II, the airport was used for military purposes and years after it became a popular arrival and departure point for celebrities and their private planes. By 2028, developers hope to have completely eradicated the airport, hangars and terminal, and will begin construction on a green space with sports fields and walking paths.
Located just south of Santa Monica proper, the park and other recreational facilities will be a welcome addition for the area’s residents who have historically complained about the fumes and noise from the neighboring airport. While some applaud the closing of the airport, others feel like waiting 11 years is too long. In an effort to alleviate the opposition, the airport has immediate plans to shorten the nearly 5,000-foot runway to 3,500 feet in hopes of reducing air traffic and fuel emissions.
