More than grand spaces and flashy amenities, the most memorable hotel stays are often defined by the details: lens-polishing cloths set beside your laptop and on your nightstand, an extra pour of a wine the sommelier knows you’ll love, or a bowl of chicken soup delivered to your room when you’re under the weather. These small, intuitive touches shaped my recent stay at Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi.
But the attention to detail here extends well beyond service. This luxury boutique hotel, just steps from Santa Fe’s historic Plaza, was imagined in a Pueblo-Revivalist style authentic to the city’s Indigenous and colonial history. The result is a property that feels genuinely rooted in its surroundings, rather than simply styled to echo them.

This ethos is apparent even before you enter the lobby’s front door. Hand-carved panels on the massive solid-plank wooden structure are adorned with geometric and symbolic motifs inspired by Pueblo and Spanish traditions, while iron studs give a nod to mission and hacienda construction. Doors to the restaurant, accommodations and communal spaces including living room and library also incorporate custom millwork, with intricate carved borders, inset panels and painted details in Southwestern hues of burnt orange, mustard yellow and adobe clay. While each has its own character, all of them seamlessly belong ― a testament to Rosewood Hotels’ focus on imbuing hotels with a genuine sense of place.
A stone-backed waterfall forms a spine from the top floor to the lobby, trickling water adding a zen-like vibe to hallways. And as an homage to the original workers (who in the early 1990s helped transform the former government building into its current iteration), a cupola surrounding a skylight is decorated with their handprints.

The 58 rooms and suites are equally intentioned, with gas kiva fireplaces, the traditional, beehive-shaped masonry structures common in New Mexico. Signature features include leather-studded headboards, throw pillows, and Pendleton wool blankets in Native American geometric patterns and local artwork. The city is, after all, the third-largest art market in the United States.)Viga and latilla ceilings, which combine exposed wooden beams with smaller crosspieces — a hallmark of Pueblo construction — feel substantial, albeit a little bit imposing.
A stylish glass-and-brass rolling bar cart stands in for the typical minibar, and a selection of snacks, from local pistachios and caramel corn to chocolate, are not only complimentary, but also replenished during your stay. Most bathrooms feature spacious showers, some with dual sinks, leather boxes containing Dyson hairdryers and attachments guarantee the perfect coif, and humidifiers help counter dry Southwestern air. A handful of accommodations come with patios to enjoy the always-glorious weather (and perhaps a bit of stargazing).

The all-day Anasazi Restaurant anchors the property and mirrors the rest of its design with wood-beamed ceilings, a kiva fireplace and layered stone walls. Executive Chef Cristian Pontiggia channels his Lombardy upbringing to the culinary program, which melds Italian and Southwestern influences in a contemporary way. Velvety mushroom cappuccino is garnished with white truffle foam, and deconstructed Caesar salad tops a cube of Romaine with a crispy tortilla ring and pickled anchovies. Delicate pappardelle is tossed in Bolognese made with ground buffalo, while poblano sauce is a locally inspired accompaniment for tender sea bass.
Wine director Kristina Hayden Bustamante is a gem, passionate about her list and excited to let you taste her favorites, from racy Vermentino and an inky, forest floor-tinged Oregon Pinot Noir. Next door, the bar is a perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink or nightcap, with a terrace open in milder weather. It’s also one of about 50 spots in the city’s Margarita Trail. Most stays come with a silver coin in a velvet pouch that can be redeemed for the eponymous margarita; guests who upgrade to a suite are rewarded with gold coins for a tipple crafted with a higher-end, private-reserve spirit. If you’re a true agave connoisseur, book a tasting of a curated tequila and mezcal flight.

The hotel’s central location means you’re only a short walk away from many of Santa Fe’s attractions like Georgia O’Keefe Museum; shopping for Native American artisanal products on the Plaza; Palace of the Governors; Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi; and De Vargas Street House, a.k.a. “the oldest house in the United States.” If you want to venture out to peruse art galleries on Canyon Road or check out the Saturday morning farmers market at Railyard (you definitely should), the hotel’s on-site activities concierge can help you plan the perfect day in Santa Fe. They also offer a complimentary Maybach SUV house car to shuttle guests within a few miles’ radius — a thoughtful touch that extends the hotel’s sense of ease well beyond its front doors.
