Ever long to know what’s on the other side of that garden gate? As part of a program offered by The Garden Conservancy — a New York-based non-profit organization devoted to preserving, sharing and celebrating America’s gardens and gardening traditions — you can discover the secrets of more than 350 private gardens in 26 states. Through November, these gardens will open to the public as part of The Garden Conservancy Open Days, a nationwide garden visiting program.
“Open Days events offer a rare opportunity to visit private gardens, connect with nature, appreciate artistry, and find inspiration from the passion projects of dedicated gardeners,” said James Brayton Hall, president and CEO, Garden Conservancy. “The excitement comes from discovering hidden gems and sharing the beauty of these private sanctuaries with fellow garden lovers.”
This year, more than 100 gardens will be included for the first time. The Garden Conservancy’s website provides details on specific gardens and their opening dates, along with ticket and registration information. A few highlights to look forward to:
Garden of Marshall Watson, East Hampton, New York
In East Hampton, New York, Garden of Marshall Watson is open to visitors June 27, providing access to two main areas — one visited by ocean winds and deer, and a second, partially enclosed garden. Holly hedges, rhododendrons, an organic vegetable patch, espaliered fruit trees, topiary lilacs and a reflecting pool share space with Versailles planters brimming with roses and figs, a Neoclassic gazebo, formal gravel pathways and a carriage house draped in wisteria.
Sievert Garden, Waukesha, Wisconsin
Sievert Garden in Waukesha, Wisconsin, opens to visitors July 25. The one-acre grounds feature more than 800 hostas, local mosses, diverse shade gardens, sunken spaces, a Williamsburg-inspired formal garden, three stumperies (sculptures made from parts of trees) and a Japanese-style garden. There are also spaces devoted to cacti and succulents, and a water garden featuring three separate elements.
Avon Flower House, Avon, Connecticut
Avon Flower House in Avon, Connecticut, is open Aug. 1, revealing colorful annuals cascading from tall pedestals, shaped topiary trees, rare conifers and brilliant ornamentals dotted across the 3-acre property. As a bonus, tours of the historic 1810 home and its collections of antiques and art will be open for tours.
