The AKC Museum of the Dog put its paws down with a permanent residence in Manhattan, home to a great number of passionate dog lovers. Housing one of the world’s grandest collections of dog art, the museum also treats visitors to a fascinating retrospective of the American Kennel Club’s history.
It’s actually a return to the museum’s origins: When it was founded in 1982, the museum was located in The New York Life Building — the new, permanent address will be 101 Park Ave. in Midtown.
Inside, visitors can enjoy paintings and sculptures by the likes of Sir Edwin Landseer and Maud Earl. The collection includes “Running Greyhounds” by sculptor Richard Fath; “Dachshund Mother and Pups” by painter Ejnar Vindfelt; and “Terriers and Butterflies” by artist Arthur Wardle.
Rare works are showcased within a two-story glass vitrine, while a number of interactive exhibits blend digital and physical experiences. At the Find Your Match kiosk, visitors can have their photo taken and uncover which AKC-registered dog breed is their match. Children can meet Arty, a virtual dog that acts as a tour guide through the museum. At the Meet the Breeds touchscreen, the features, traits and history of various breeds are revealed.
