If a new design from SE Aeronautics receives its pending patent and moves into production, economy passengers can look forward to a more enjoyable flying experience with more space and comfort.

The design from Lloyd Weaver and Burk Dagget of SE Aeronautics, named the “morphing” airline seat, can transition from an upright position to a fully reclining position, with enough room to recline without bothering passengers in front of or behind. Made from a thin viscoelastic material, the layered cushion molds to the passenger’s body shape.

Because the seats can fully recline, some question how the same number of seats currently on planes will fit, and airlines may be reluctant to adopt the design as it may compromise revenue. Other arguments support finally investing and giving the same attention to economy-class seats as is given to business-class seats, and that the thinner material may save overall costs that would be lost when decreasing the number of seats onboard.
