Oberhausen, on the Ruhr River at the outskirts of Essen, is not merely a city transformed — it is wholly repurposed. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, its main industries were coal mining, iron and steel production, and manufacturing. Today, it is defined by its intentional evolutionary path toward a green, 21st-century city tailored for a healthier and more outdoorsy standard of living. What makes it a particularly compelling choice for a meeting or conference destination is it doesn’t hide its past. Instead, it shows how a municipality can use what’s there to move toward a more environmentally sound future.

Family-owned Parkhotel Oberhausen stands out as it embodies the spirit of Oberhausen’s reinvention. There are several European- and internationally-branded business hotels in the older business district, near the main train station, and within the New Mitte city center. In this context, Paul and Ursula Wischermann’s vision to immerse guests into Oberhausen’s high quality of life succeeds.

The 98-room boutique hotel is roughly a 10- to 15-minute drive from New Mitte, yet is regarded as the “best hotel in town” among locals and regular guests with its warm, nature-inspired, minimalist design and adaptable public spaces. Although more upscale inns and hotels are in various stages of development along the Ruhr, Parkhotel’s aesthetic sets the tone for other properties opening in the future while the residential setting surrounding gives it extra character.

There is a choice of standard, larger “comfort category” rooms, and junior suites, many outfitted with a whirlpool tub with a TV in the bathroom. The wellness area includes a fitness area, Finnish sauna and two infrared cabins.

Zur Bockmühle, the hotel’s signature restaurant, presents simple but beautifully plated appetizers and dinners made with seasonal produce and proteins sourced from the area. There are also rotating specials spotlighting the season’s best vegetable or seasoning (such as white asparagus in my spring visit) and a small curated list of mostly German wines. Schottes Kneipe, its adjoining traditional German pub, offers comfort food and draft beer in a neighborhood-y setting contrasting with modern restaurants and interactive venues found inside New Mitte.

Larger spaces at Park Oberhausen include Le Jardin (serving high-quality breakfast daily), a leafy outdoor lounge space, and a five-lane bowling alley available for business mixers, small meetings and family gatherings.

Parkhotel Oberhausen’s contributions to the community should also appeal to businesses and meeting planners looking for something reflecting the city’s elevated quality of life. The architects and furniture designers hired to create the hotel’s fresh look hail from Oberhausen. Employees and interns are hired directly by management rather than an agency, making it no surprise employee turnover stands just at 2 percent.

It has a solid track record as a “good neighbor” through its regular contributions of equipment, funds and assets to non-profits such as the Oberhausen women’s shelter, and maintains an evolving roster of sustainability initiatives that place equal importance on reusing and recycling.

As Oberhausen is simultaneously emerging as a leisure destination, there are several conversation-starting spots a short drive from Parkhotel Oberhausen. These include the “Slinky Springs to Fame” pedestrian bridge and neighboring Ludwiggalerie with gallery space, an eclectic boutique and a casually romantic cafe. The UNESCO World Heritage-designated ZollvereinSteig in nearby Essen is marked by the now-iconic Doppelbock, the functional centerpiece of the world’s largest coal mine and coking plant. Today, it is a visual gateway to a 26.3-kilometer hiking trail and paved bike paths.

While the definition of “quality of life” has changed since the Krupp’s time, Parkhotel Oberhausen provides a taste of how travelers can sample a distinctly German amalgam of style, comfort and pragmatism in lodging.
