Communication between pilots and air traffic controllers is reaching new heights thanks to technology that will contribute to the overall safety and efficiency of air travel.
Currently, pilots communicate with air traffic controllers via a radio network, but a company called DataComm introduced a new method of information exchange between the two positions to enhance and accelerate the taking-off and landing processes.
Rather than relying on radio communication, the new system will involve data transfer from the air traffic control tower directly to the cockpit and will include updates about weather patterns, flight paths and other vital information for pilots. If a bad weather pattern is on the horizon, for example, air traffic controllers can notify pilots with the push of a button, and can notify multiple planes at the same time. This rapid transfer of information is expected to decrease overall flying (and taxiing) time by 20 minutes.
The efficiency of this data transfer also allows air traffic controllers to spend more time focusing on the safe arrival and departure of planes at their airport post. With simply communicated and direct information between air traffic controllers and pilots that does not hinge upon unreliable radio waves, there is less room for error.
