The opening of New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong International Airport’s new terminal has pushed back yet again, marking the fourth delay for the $1 billion project.
Officials are now saying the new facility, previously scheduled to open May 15, won’t be ready until this fall.
“The fact is: it is not ready, and there is more work to be done to get us there,” said New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
The city estimated the terminal is about 95 percent finished, but there are still some concessions construction and security checkpoints to finalize. There’s also a new highway ramp that connects the terminal to Interstate 10 that isn’t finished.
The terminal’s groundbreaking occurred in January 2016, and the original plan was to open in time for the city’s tricentennial celebration in 2018. The opening pushed back to February 2019 after the city decided to build 35 gates instead of the planned 30.
Cost estimates ballooned from $598 million to more than $1 billion.
