Remote, relaxing and the ideal setting for refreshing your worldview and bolstering your goals, new Tinajani Retreat may be just what you’ve been waiting for. High on serenity, it’s located in a canyon between Cusco and Lake Titicaca in the Andes mountains of southern Peru. Part of the family-owned Andean collection of remarkable properties, this unique getaway consists of six tented campamentos erected on 400 acres that once served as a 19th-century sheep and alpaca farm. Now a private conservation area with a long-term stewardship granted by Peru’s Ministries of Culture and Agriculture, the retreat is sectioned off into separate zones arranged around the original 1850s-era family home.
Each of the new campamentos feature a bedroom, separate lounge, wood-burning stove and private deck for hot tubbing and stargazing. Furnishings include Peruvian cotton bedding, handmade rugs from Arequipa woven from lambswool and throws crafted from alpaca wool. A dining room and other spaces can be found in an annex constructed in 1947, while the “Galpón” is an open-air area for lounging and dining.
Prepared in open kitchens, meals celebrate fresh produce and local ingredients. The breakfast menu includes choices such as Andean cereal crepes, oatmeal, chapla bread and a cup of muña or Cedron tea. Lunch and dinner selections might include a fondue of Andean cheeses, slow-cooked stews and grains gathered in the highlands. In the evening, sweet, warming api — a traditional drink crafted from purple corn flower and spices— is served.
While you’re there, explore the landscape in the company of native guides by hiking among sandstone cliffs to view petroglyphs predating the Incas, go horseback riding through the canyon and visit the T’ika T’ika trees found in the Puyas de Raimondi forest that bloom only once in each tree’s 30-year lifespan. Guests are also invited to take part in meditation ceremonies held at sunrise, and to visit the communities of Ayaviri and Pucara where craftspeople still practice arts passed down to them from their ancestors. Excursions farther afield to Cusco, Colca or Lake Titicaca can also be arranged.
