A study from Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection found 23 percent of travelers plan to purchase more travel insurance in 2020 than in 2019. The numbers are highest among millennials, with 71 percent planning to buy more travel insurance next year. Reasons include trip cost, family health and cancellation fears.

Millennials also reported they are most afraid of epidemics and terrorism while traveling. Additionally, millennials are 10 times more likely to fear for the safety of their pet while traveling, as compared to other generations.

Out of all survey respondents, more than two-thirds said they plan to do something dangerous while traveling in order to post a photo on social media.

Overall, travelers reported they view Italy, France, Japan, Australia and New Zealand as some of the safest countries in which to travel.

“While the past several years of our research has uncovered that millennials continue to show steady increases in their intentions to purchase travel insurance, what surprised us this year is 64 percent stated travel scares them a little,” said Dean Sivley, president, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection. “It says a lot about millennials who by and large indicated an appetite to take risks while traveling yet are showing they are savvy enough to protect themselves with travel insurance.”
