New statistics on business traveler behavior during the start of the year show Uber and Lyft gaining more favor as they replace car rentals and taxis. The Certify quarterly SpendSmart report details business traveler habits by analyzing 9 million business travel expense reports.

Since December 2015, transactions with the two companies increased by 4 percent, now accounting for 46 percent of all ground transportation costs. While Uber leads Lyft in the category, the often lesser known competitor is catching up, with growth of 44 percent over the previous quarter.

“Uber’s continued success and Lyft’s recent growth with the business travel market is really being driven by three factors: cost, convenience and customer satisfaction. These ride-hailing services have perfected a model that allows employees to choose the kind of experience they want when traveling for business while also saving the company a great deal of money in the process,” said Robert Neveu, CEO, Certify.

According to the survey, when business travelers do choose to rent a car, rather than using Uber or Lyft, the most popular rental service is National, followed by Enterprise, Hertz, Avis and Budget. The average cost per car rental reported was $187.41, with the most expensive service on average being Hertz, and the most affordable being Enterprise.

Global Traveler recently conducted its own survey, polling members of the Globility Board, a carefully selected group of frequent business and luxury travelers. When asked about their ground transportation when traveling, 75 percent of respondents agreed they find Uber and Lyft more convenient than a car rental, and 37.5 percent say they find themselves renting less, most preferring Uber as an alternative.

When respondents did choose to rent a car while traveling, they almost overwhelmingly chose Hertz (62.5 percent), with Avis (18.8 percent) following far behind. Alamo, Enterprise and National rounded out the bottom tier of choices.
