Sonoma County traffic takes a two-wheel turn on May 8 when a contingency of environmental stewards from The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa join thousands of cycling enthusiasts for the 20th Annual Bike-to-Work Day. If you’re planning to be in the area, you’re welcome to join the initiative.
During morning commute hours, Sonoma County businesses, government agencies and dozens of volunteers — coordinated by Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition — set up 30 energizer stations throughout the county, including a station at the employee entrance of The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn. These manned stations provide Bike-to-Work-Day participants with coffee, juice, and breakfast foods while distributing 1,600 reusable Bike-to-Work-Day canvas musette-style bags filled with goodies.
“Bike-to-Work Day has a solid reputation as a positive, fun, environmentally conscious, health-promoting, and community-building event and The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is a proud participant,” said Rick Corcoran, general manager, The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, who will bike to work and then take a shift at the hotel’s energizer station. “Sonoma County is a national model for innovative bicycle-friendly transportation facilities and programs. Energizing our commitment to ‘think globally and act locally,’ we are proud to support hotel-based environmental initiatives that encourage partnerships and learning while addressing universal environmental issues.”

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
