Getting to and from Leopard Sands Kruger Park on the Banks of the Sabie River in Kruger National Park is half the fun, as it is a short, scenic drive from tiny Skukuza Airport (possibly one of the most attractive and mellow in existence) and main entrance of Kruger National Park, which turns 100 in 2026. Having evolved into a well-oiled machine since its December 2023 opening, it presents its first “wow” moment 30 minutes before even setting foot on the property. As baggage is brought in from the plane, drivers from the lodge set out a selection of beer; soft drinks; and locally produced dried fruit, nut mixes and biltong (the South African cousin to jerky). It’s a small sample of what’s to come.

En route to the property, guests may encounter another sneak preview of the Leopard Sands experience, such as a sighting of hippos enjoying a midday swim in the Sabie River. The lodge goes big with the arrival, right after chilled refreshment towels and welcome drinks are passed out and luggage is transferred from the van to one of the 18 guest suites. A local troupe performs songs and dances, compelling guests to interact. Although it may strike some experienced travelers as a little touristy at first, general manager Van Heerden Haasbroek and his staff provide context that shifts the paradigm to reflect its mission to bridge luxury and community.

Luxury and premium suites, originally designed by Vanessa Preston of Varoom Interior Designs and currently being refreshed by Delta Designs’ Grant Gillis, feature a fresh, clean layout that flows gently onto the private decks and plunge pools overlooking the river. While the centerpiece of each room is a bed artfully draped with mosquito nets offering protection and romantic vibes, the rest of the space is filled out with organic wood desks and cabinets crafted with rustic, nature-inspired motifs; rich artisanal textiles; an elegant soaking tub; tiled interior shower; and outdoor shower filled with South African-made soaps and lotions. The overall look is finished with black-and-white nature photography and hand-crafted accents true to the surroundings without looking overly “safari.”

The outdoor deck of the restaurant and adjoining pool area overlook the Sabie, where hippos, elephants and other animals and birds make regular appearances. There is a variety of seating arrangements in the restaurant, all of them making a guest feel like they are immersed in the heart of nature in a similar fashion to the free-standing suites. A newly opened fitness room is well-equipped, too.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are developed with care by executive chef Warren Garner and chef Kevin Govender. The duo delivers flavorful spins on international and South African dishes made with local produce and seasoning and some desserts inspired by beloved candy bars like Peppermint Crisp and Big Five. The Wednesday and Saturday “Boma” dinners are a culinary highlight, with grilled chops, vegetables and stews made out in the open and served family-style following a song and dance performance.

In every free-standing guest suite, there is a menu of additional activities guests can add to one’s personal itinerary for an extra fee, including a day at Skukuza Golf Club; Shangana Cultural Village visits; customized in-room massages; guided walking safaris; and a Panorama Route drive to breathtaking sites including God’s Window, Bourke’s Lot Potholes and Blyde River Canyon. Leopard Sands guides, who grew up in or are long-time residents of the area, bring warmth, humor and an impressive depth of knowledge to the property’s game drives along with house-made refreshments, cold water and soft drinks, and warm panchos for the chilly morning drives which often yield the best photos of the Big Five and other animals.

Haasbroek expresses the belief his employees define the place as much as the animals, and the astute personalized service reflects it: “From the beginning, we used our location outside of the park as our strength,” he said, explaining what distinguishes the Leopard Sands experience from other luxury properties with their own private game drive grounds.

It is fitting the resort was built on the site of a former school, given the team is personally invested in creating a stay that is grounding and educational even as it provides a breathtaking escape.

Turin, Italy, Gets Brand-New Metro Line

Recreating an urban transportation infrastructure as a recognizable urban landmark for a city is already difficult, and when the urban project is within the historic city of Turin, Italy, with its rich history and contemporary vibrancy, it is extra difficult. With UNStudio’s proposal, however, they converted the city’s history by translating city places into a contemporary and welcoming transit system.
