Ever feel tempted to get wild with a block of ice in a snowy mountain setting? Your chance is coming up at the Ice Sculpting Workshop in Grand Lake, Colorado, hosted by the town of Grand Lake Creative District. On Feb. 7, Rocky Mountain Folk School offers a hands-on ice sculpting workshop as part of the Grand Viking Winter Carnival.
The class takes place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, with expert-led instruction provided by professional ice sculptors from Denver-based Colorado Ice Works. Included are a safety and tool use demonstration, along with training on design transfers and various carving techniques.
“Watching ice transform under skilled hands reminds us that even the most fleeting materials can hold incredible beauty — bringing people together through shared moments of art, creativity and winter wonder,” said Gillian Horne, executive director, Rocky Mountain Folk School.
Participants each get their own block of clear ice and all the hand tools required. Then, guided by their imaginations and Colorado Ice Works teams, class members create their own icy masterpiece. After its completion, each piece of art will be briefly subjected to heat to “polish” the ice, resulting in a crystal-clear effect. Each sculpture will be wrapped and boxed so the newly forged sculptors can transport their ice works home.
Along with the ice sculpting workshop, events at the Grand Viking Winter Carnival include snowmobile races, axe-throwing, miniature golf, bed sled races, lawn darts and the Winter Carnival Ball. Also not to be missed: teapot curling, where colorful teapots take the place of traditional curling stones in a precision ice game. Viking-themed dress is encouraged for the festival. Pre-registration for the ice sculpting class is necessary, and spots are limited.

Jun 3, 2026Counting Stars: Acclaimed Restaurants Elevate Hotel Dining
The dining experience began long before I even stepped foot into the 2-Michelin-starred restaurant at Hotel Arts Barcelona. As my husband and I checked in, we could tell the property was already setting the tone for what was to come. A private elevator brought us to the club level where we were greeted with two key cards for our hotel room and two freshly poured glasses of bubbling Cava Gran Reserva, perfectly chilled and perfectly timed.

Jun 3, 2026Leopard Sands River Lodge Review
Getting to and from Leopard Sands River Lodge in Kruger National Park is half the fun, as it is a short, scenic drive from tiny Skukuza Airport (possibly one of the most attractive and mellow in existence) and main entrance of Kruger National Park, which turns 100 in 2026. Having evolved into a well-oiled machine since its December 2023 opening, it presents its first “wow” moment 30 minutes before even setting foot on the property. As baggage is brought in from the plane, drivers from the lodge set out a selection of beer; soft drinks; and locally produced dried fruit, nut mixes and biltong (the South African cousin to jerky). It’s a small sample of what’s to come.

Jun 1, 2026Review: The Peninsula London
ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: Flying into London early comes with its ups and downs, as I typically anticipate waiting in a sort of limbo until my room is ready. But Paul from The Peninsula London was already waiting at London Heathrow with a smile, and he drove us to the hotel in a luxury car, complete with massagers, while we chatted away. Circling into the iconic courtyard was a treat in itself (Paul pointed out some of the other top-class cars), and staff at check-in warmly welcomed us, offering our tired and dehydrated selves some water. We were escorted up to our room immediately.
