Hotel groups recently made impressive strides forward with design, décor and improvements in the experiential appeal of practical airport lodging. But chef-hotelier Jean-Christophe Touzeau quietly and artistically shaped a delightful alternative. For starters, La Villa K Hotel & Spa is located not on a frontage road near EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg but rather on Avenue de Bâle, the main street of Saint Louis, on the France side of the “Three Borders” region skirting Germany and Switzerland. Young, energetic and multilingual staff add to the hotel’s breezy appeal.

In 2011, Touzeau — who trained under noted chefs Joël Robuchon and Guy Savoy—took ownership of the Art Nouveau-era building originally a private home and later La Cour du Roy hotel. Two years and a €3.5 million investment later, La Villa K opened with a mission to be more than an airport hotel or inn serving wine country tourism in France and Germany.
Thanks in part to a 2020 room remodel by Paris-based NIDO Architecture, the 41-room property is fashionable, functional and inviting in a way that contrasts with the ultra-formal, 5-star hotels in Basel’s city center. With much of its 1906 architectural framework intact, every bedroom and suite has a distinct personality enhanced by contemporary interior design, a smart mix of books and room accents, and a calming cameo blue and cream color palette. Most rooms are appointed with creature comforts like whirlpool baths, steam showers, king-sized beds, walk-in closets and Nespresso machines. Rather than traditional mints or chocolates on pillows, guests find fresh-baked madeleines.

Executive K rooms and a family suite on the top floor of the north wing, meanwhile, add an extra dimension of home-style comfort with amenities like a fully equipped kitchen, loaded bookshelves, a dressing room and more.

The public areas of La Villa K include an interior patio; a 24-hour fitness center; and a bar/lounge where a French breakfast is served daily with pastries, smoothies, artisanal cheese and charcuterie. At night, the hotel’s dining space transforms into Bistrot La Cave, popular among residents and visitors and described as a “bistronomic spot known for creative French cuisine using fresh, seasonal ingredients,” along with nicely curated wine lists.

The hotel’s in-house spa played a role in making La Villa K a “best-kept secret” among airline crews and other travelers in the know. Even more impressive is the benefits of a larger spa neatly installed into a tidy space, though the spa menu of luxury, functional and SKINTEX LAB microcurrent treatments is both thorough and prolific. The spa also allows guests to have the space to themselves for one to two hours with a reservation. Products used include Ella Baché and La Sultane de Saba.
The fact Saint Louis has its own identity makes a stay richer. Just outside the front door, numerous bakeries, dessert and sandwich cafés, and upscale food shops line the avenue. Efficient DistriBus 604 whisks riders to the heart of Basel in less than 30 minutes. Better still, the hotel provides complimentary transportation to and from the airport via partnerships with local taxi companies.
