On a small coral island just 25 minutes by boat from Placencia, Belize, five villas edge the sand with not much else around. No neighbors. No noise. No check-in counters. When you arrive at Kanu Private Island, there is no one waiting in line before you because there is no one else coming. This is a one-party island booked through Gecko Vacation Rentals, and everything from welcome drinks to your farewell transfer is designed around your group alone.

Kanu is small in footprint, just 2.5 acres, but feels larger in practice. The five villas, each more than 1,000 square feet, are arranged with enough distance and greenery between them to allow both privacy and ease. And each has its own unobstructed sea view. Inside, the design is breezy and intentional. High bamboo ceilings and Belizean-crafted furniture ground the spaces, while spa-style bathrooms, air conditioning and reliable WiFi make them feel quietly luxurious despite their remote location. Some include soaking tubs and outdoor showers. Together, villas can accommodate up to 10 adults and 10 children, though many groups arrive smaller and simply spread out.

At the center of the island, a thatched-roof palapa draws everyone together. This open-air space serves as kitchen, dining room, bar and living area, all just steps from a freshwater pool flanked by loungers and shaded hammocks. Paddleboards and kayaks await your interest, as does snorkeling gear for swimming among rays, nurse sharks, parrotfish and vibrant corals not far from shore. Circumnavigate your private oasis with any of these, any time. If you never left the island, you’d still feel like you did plenty.

But leaving is an option. Kanu’s concierge is available 24/7, and your reservation comes with a boat captain who can take your group beyond the island. Bookings include a round-trip transfer to town for shopping, dining or nightlife, and additional transfers can be added any time. Excursions can be arranged through trusted local partners like Captain Jak’s and include snorkeling the Silk Cayes, fishing Belize’s outer reef, touring Monkey River, or visiting inland sites like Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and ancient Maya ruins. Trips are scheduled at your pace.

There’s no restaurant schedule to navigate, no towel cards and no neighbors to consider. Add a full-time chef to unlock meal customization, from Belizean classics to vegetarian menus to multicourse celebrations, or whatever feels right in the moment. Meals can be served under the palapa, on your villa deck or toes in the sand along the beach. Snacks appear where you’re sitting. Drinks arrive without needing to wave anyone down. The service is attentive, warm and entirely personalized.

Massages are included, up to four per day for your group. Additional spa treatments can be arranged, and yoga instructors or private fitness sessions can be added for anyone looking to balance out the plentiful meals with a bit of movement. When the sun sets, entertainment can be brought in. Musicians, dancers and other performers have all made appearances for celebrations or just a special night in. A pool table stands ready in the main palapa, and games, books, puzzles and more are tucked among the lounging areas for anyone who prefers a quieter evening.

Marine life is part of the daily routine at Kanu. From shore, you can often spot activity in the clear water surrounding the reef, but the best dry viewing comes after dark. Just off the dock, a fixed light illuminates the seabed at night, drawing in fish small and large, including sharks. No guide required, no schedule to follow . . . just a quiet show of underwater life in the glow.

Minimum stays start at four nights, but it’s hardly enough.
