Under a new agreement between the city of Juneau, Alaska, and major cruise lines sailing to the city, cruise passengers will be limited. The agreement aims to limit the number of daily cruise passengers who can arrive in the city to 16,000 Sunday–Friday and 12,000 on Saturdays.

Set to go into effect in 2026, the measure seeks to limit congestion and its effects on Juneau. Last year, a record 1.6 million people visited Juneau.

“The cruise industry is vital to our local economy, and we need to improve our infrastructure and grow our tour capacity to create a great guest experience and reduce impacts on residents,” said Alexandra Pierce, director, Juneau Visitor Industry. “With this agreement, we are committing to a cap to manage our busiest days and to meet annually to ensure that our visitor numbers remain sustainable.”

Other popular cities around the world implemented similar measures. Venice, Italy, was the first city in the world to charge day visitors a fee to enter the city on peak travel days. On Sept. 25, 2023, the prime minister of Iceland, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, announced plans to add a tax on travelers visiting the country.
