Hôtel Balzac, a 5-star, 58- room and -suite Relais & Chateaux affiliate launched in the prestigious 8th arrondissement in June 2024, occupies the site of 19th-century novelist Honoré de Balzac’s former home, and sits on a quiet corner where two streets honor literati, Rue Balzac and Rue Lord Byron.

Architects Charlotte de Tonnac and Hugo Sauzay of Agence Festen, a Parisian interior design agency, collaborated on the project and were inspired by the hotel’s intricate architectural details, from its exterior façade — with its lanterns, elevated steps and majestic entrance — to its interior high ceilings and grand windows. The duo maintained that rich heritage while completely reinventing the décor.

A few steps reach the elevated entry, also outfitted with a convenient lift for guests and luggage. The landing does double duty: One sublime set of doors opens to the lobby, with the other entering the three-Michelin-star restaurant Pierre Gagnaire, identified only by its logo.

There’s an inviting feel to the reception area, where the minimalist setting features contemporary white sofas fronting tall light-filled windows; the ambiance is warmed with dark wood walls and a classic white-and-black checkered floor. The chic lobby opens to the glass-roofed, all-day lounge, where even breakfast is served stylishly (no D.I.Y. buffet here!). Next door, there’s a cozy, dimly lit bar, access to the adjacent restaurant and elevators to the accommodations.

Among the guestrooms and suites, some view the Eiffel Tower and two top-floor suites offer open-air terraces. Ours had a separate bedroom with a Juliet balcony overlooking the courtyard and a graciously sized salon with a couch, desk and movable television on a stand. Its neutral moiré wall coverings are wood framed, like paintings. When my London cousins visited one rainy November afternoon, there was time after lunch to relax, and we spent a leisurely hour in a retreat that felt like “home away from home,” for both its comfort and the hotel’s spirit.

Throughout the ageless décor, velvet and moiré fabrics, natural stone, marble and mosaics, plus burled wood, solid oak, lacquered pieces and objets d’art, all contribute to its sophistication. The neutral palette of brown, tawny, cognac, and camel, and the clean lines of the custom-designed furniture evoking the 1930s and 40s, add to its appeal.

The Japanese-inspired Ikoï Spa at Hotel Balzac on the lower level showcases shoji-like wooden doors lining the corridor and hiding the facilities. Ikoï translates from Japanese to “a place where one feels good,” and the spa’s fitness room, three treatment cabins, sauna and plunge pool contribute to that goal.

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to experience Restaurant Pierre Gagnaire. Even the least costly, multicourse, fixed-price lunch was presented with several amuses, an array of creative side dishes and a nine-course dessert, each as extraordinary as the other. The gastronomic meal mesmerized and surprised, because the chef who started his career working for the famous — and flashy — M. Paul (Bocuse) presents a far more serene culinary style.
