Opened to the public in November 2021, after nine years of stop-and-start construction, M+ is Asia’s first global museum of 20th- and 21st-century contemporary art, and its location in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District has become a magnet for visitors wishing to experience the amazing visual and performance art at M+, as well as the diverse and colorful West Kowloon district.
The West Kowloon Cultural District emerged gradually from the seaport, where, section by section, the natural harbor was filled with earth. On this reclaimed land sits the site of M+, connected to the city and overlooking the sea. The M+ building is a focal point between West Kowloon Cultural District and the Park, the Avenue and Victoria Harbor.
Designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Farrells, the 700,000-square-foot cultural center for 20th- and 21st-century art, design, architecture and the moving image is as beautiful and eclectic as the artwork inside. M+ offers an entire spectrum of spaces for displaying their collections and the activities related to exhibiting and viewing the work. In less than one year, M+ has become an iconic and important Hong Kong destination.
The covered entrance podium forms a bright, welcoming public space guests can enter from all sides and levels, making the activities of the museum easily accessible, and inviting visitors into the large and imaginative galleries. Even the surface of the building’s façade has become art-worthy, with artistic messages displayed on giant screens that can be seen from Hong Kong Island across the harbor.
Visiting hours are Tuesday–Thursday and weekends, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m.–10 p.m; and closed Monday. Reserve entry tickets by date and time on the M+ website. Admission to the M+ galleries is free for 12 months from the opening date of Nov. 12, 2021, for all visitors.
