Hong Kong International Airport recently opened its new Midfield Concourse, as part of its efforts to increase capacity and meet traffic demands. The new, 105,000-square-metre, five-story concourse is near Terminal 1 and between the airport’s two existing runways, and adds 20 parking positions and increases the number of passengers able to board at any one time. The concourse also includes new dining and shopping options, as well as redesigned waiting areas with computer stations and free WiFi.
“The Concourse is an important development project that will help HKIA meet increasing traffic demand in the medium term, as we work toward completion of the three-runway system,” said Jack So Chak-kwong, chairman, Airport Authority Hong Kong. “Incorporating numerous green features, the facility was designed with sustainability in mind.”
The green features incorporated into the concourse’s design include low-energy lighting systems, skylights, solar shades and rooftop solar panels. The airport aims for the concourse to be one of the first in Hong Kong to achieve the BEAM Plus Final Gold Standard.
