Planning a trip to Sweden? Be sure Gothenburg is part of your itinerary. The shining star of Sweden’s western coast, Gothenburg is known for its culinary scene, history and nightlife. Explore what’s regarded as the most impressive collection of late 19th-century national-romantic Scandinavian art at the Gothenburg Museum of Art at Götaplatsen Square, where the collection includes works by Edvard Munch, Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn. At the Gothenburg City Museum, the city’s history is traced back 12,000 years, with an ancient Viking ship on display.
Stroll the historic Haga district, where cobblestone streets wend through the 18th-century neighborhood, filled today with trendy cafes and vintage shops. Just outside of town, the neoclassical Gunnebo House and Gardens — once a summer villa for local merchant John Hall — is a haven of landscaped gardens and parks designed by city architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg. The on-site café serves organic fare from the gardens, but if you’re still feeling peckish when you get back to city center, head for the fish market hall Feskekôrka, which translates to “fish church.” Originally built in 1874, the space is the perfect spot for dining on the city’s freshest seafood offerings. Before you leave Gothenburg, catch a local ferry to explore the archipelago of small islands for hiking and sightseeing; or stay in town and plan your stay for the annual summer Way Out West music festival, taking place Aug. 1–13.
Wondering where to stay? Choose the romantically quirky Hotel Pigalle, steps from the trolley stop and brimming with character and a décor reminiscent of early 1900s Paris. Here, rich brocades and velvets, beautiful wallpapers and whimsical touches add up to luxury and sweet dreams. In the morning, head upstairs to the Atelier, where the atmosphere is deliberately designed for an intimate tryst and plenty of locally produced treats. The restaurant also serves lunch, brunch and dinner with a menu of cleverly named dishes such as Woolly on the Meadow (Swedish lamb with garlic and feta), Plenty of Fish in the Sea (buttered skrei with blue mussels) and Snacky Meat from Spain (air-cured and smoked beef selections). There’s also Bar Amuse, where the selection of wines, spirits and cocktails invites lingering and late-night conversation.

Mar 28, 2024Cruise Lines Elevate the Onboard Fine-Dining Experience
It’s been a long time since the food on cruise ships resembled the bland, uninspired fare that gave onboard dining a bad name. These days, cruise passengers can look forward to menus created by Michelin-starred chefs made with top-quality ingredients served in stunning spaces. Choices abound as well. In addition to elegant main dining rooms, cruise ships have created a huge array of specialty restaurants that focus not only on perfectly executed traditional European and North American dishes but flavors and experiences from around the globe as well. In fact, meals served aboard cruise vessels have gotten so good, they’re drawing passengers onto ships: According to a recent report by luxury travel planning network Virtuoso, advisors report after Europe (specifically Italy and France), the No. 2 dining destination for travelers is aboard an ocean or river cruise. “This shows how cruise lines have really stepped up their culinary game, with consulting chefs and new restaurants and making that a focal point,” said Misty Belles, vice president, Global Public Relations, Virtuoso.
