Through May 10, theater lovers are in for a treat: Helicline Fine Art presents Showstoppers: The Art of Stage and Screen, a grand visual journey through almost 100 years of Broadway, film, dance, opera and entertainment experienced through the lens of some of the world’s most prominent artists and designers.

The exhibition includes costumes, set design drawings, sculptures, illustrations and paintings from the 1920s through the 1990s, inspired by the world of performance and exploring the essential role played by visual artists in creating the magical worlds that frame, embellish and enrich a play, film or show. Among the displays are items related to The King and I, The Wiz, Phantom of the Opera, Dreamgirls, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, My Fair Lady, South Pacific and Funny Girl. These include works by designers — many Tony- and Oscar-winning Individuals — such as Boris Aronson, Cecil Beaton, Leon Bibel, William Gropper, Edith Head, Al Hirschfeld, Mervyn Jules, Gaston Lachaise, Bob Mackie, Jo Mielziner, Irene Sharaff, Yves Saint Laurent, Tony Walton, Miles White and Richard Whorf.

“Although I founded Helicline Fine Art in 2008, my lifelong professional passion has been leading a Times Square communications firm,” said Keith Sherman, co-founder, Helicline Fine Art. “From the start of my career, I’ve worked in theatre, film, television, music, dance, and major cultural events. Some of the artists in this exhibition were friends — and even clients. These works are profoundly personal to me, and I believe they will resonate deeply with anyone who loves entertainment and the arts.”

Showstoppers: The Art of Stage and Screen can be viewed by appointment in person at the gallery in Midtown Manhattan, or via private Zoom presentations.
