Governor Assures Travelers Hawai’i’s “Air Quality is Safe”

While travelers express concerns about emissions from Hawai’i’s Kilauea volcano eruption, both the state’s governor, David Ige, and State Department of Health director, Dr. Virginia Pressler, assert the air quality of the Hawai’ian islands is safe and travelers should not worry about booking vacations.

George D. Szigeti, president and CEO, Hawaii Tourism Authority, also reinforced the message, welcoming travelers to choose the destination for future trips. Kilauea is one of  the island’s most popular attractions, active since 1983. However, most of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is currently closed until further notice.

“The air quality for the vast majority of the Hawaiian Islands is clean and healthy. The emissions from Kilauea volcano are a non-factor for Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kauai. The weather is beautiful and warm with cooling trade winds everywhere in Hawaii and is exactly what travelers expect when coming here for a relaxing and fun vacation experience,” said Dr. Pressler.

Gov. Ige also addressed concerns about laze, a natural reaction occurring when lava flows into the ocean, and the Puna Geothermal Venture plant. Laze is limited to a certain area and is not a danger if people maintain a safe distance. Underground wells at Puna Geothermal Venture plant were sealed and secured to minimize danger, and the state is actively reducing the risk from nearby lava flows.

“Hawaii’s air quality is being closely monitored on a continuing basis by scientists, meteorologists and the Hawaii State Department of Health. This team of experts says the air quality in the Hawaiian Islands is safe for residents and visitors, except in the affect[ed] areas,” said Gov. Ige. “The bottom line is that there is no reason for travelers to avoid making their vacation plans in the Hawai’ian Islands due to safety concerns because of Kilauea volcano.”
