Travel to Japan has increased drastically, particularly among Americans, but there’s also a growing trend drawing travelers beyond typical destinations like Tokyo and Kyoto. More and more U.S. tourists seek authentic, rural escapes, and one emerging Japanese destination is lush Kii Peninsula on Honshū.
Comprising the Mie, Wakayama and Nara Prefectures, Kii is an easy train ride from Kyoto or Osaka, but retains that remote feeling. In fact, the region is notable for its restorative hot springs found throughout the peninsula.
Here’s where you’ll find some of the best hot springs in Kii:

For Oceanfront and Cave Hot Springs
In the Wakayama Prefecture, take a UNESCO pilgrimage route through misty mountains, sacred waterfalls, ancient shrines and, of course, oceanfront hot springs. At Nanki Shirahama, designated one of Japan’s three great onsen resort areas, you can enjoy either a traditional ryokan stay or a luxury seaside hotel. The area is home to beachside, open-air baths, once used by nobles in the Asuka period. In Katsuura, an onsen village situated between the Pacific and mountains near Nachi Falls, you’ll find Hotel Urashima, a resort-ryokan complex famous for its natural cave hot springs.

For a Historic Hot Springs Experience
Dorogawa Onsen in Nara Prefecture is a high-altitude hot springs village long a retreat for ascetic water practitioners traveling to nearby Mount Omine. While here, stay in Kadojin, a boutique, eight-room ryokan boasting spacious tatami suites with both communal and private open-air onsen baths. Additionally, in 2026, the area welcomes a luxury hotel, which takes over the former Nara Prison development. The HOSHINOYA-branded property will offer guests a rare insight into the region’s rich heritage.
