Emirates lowered the allowable weight for checked bags for customers purchasing its cheapest economy fares.
The initiative started Feb. 4; customers who buy Special fares will see even tighter restrictions on the weight of their checked bags. Emirates lowered the allowable weights from 44 pounds to 33 pounds. On the Saver fare, the drop is 66 pounds to 55 pounds.
The changes also apply to the number of luggage pieces allowed. Special and Saver customers are reduced from two bags each weighing up to 50 pounds to just one piece. Economy Flex and Flex Plus passengers still get two pieces up to 50 pounds, while business- and first-class customers get two pieces up to 70 pounds.
These new limits are applied to all routes except those to and from the Americas and those starting in Africa.
Economy Flex and Flex Plus weights remain the same at 66 and 77 pounds respectively. Business-class passenger allowances stay at 88 pounds and first class remains at 110 pounds.
Anyone flying as an elite tier member of the Emirates Skywards loyalty program have extra checked luggage allowances, which remain unchanged.
