Rather than toss old uniforms and seat fabric when new designs roll out, Delta Air Lines is turning to “upcycling” to keep fabric out of landfills. The move saved some 350,000 pounds of textiles from returned old uniforms alone, following the release of new designs earlier this year.

The airline says this was one of the largest single company textile landfill diversions in U.S. history.

Many items were donated to The Salvation Army and youth homeless projects, or recycled as pet bedding and pillow stuffing. A large amount was also repurposed by Oregon-based company Looptworks, which creates upcycled items like purses, backpacks, travel kits, passport covers and other bags and accessories. The Delta items are available for sale.

The items show elements of Delta’s uniforms, like the red dress, navy suit and black trench coat. Retired seats have also been woven into some of the products for added “durability and design interest.” A portion of the proceeds from each item goes to charity.

“Our partnership with Looptworks gives new life to retired uniforms and seat covers that would have otherwise ended up in landfills, supports Delta’s commitment to serving local communities and provides one-of-a-kind goods that are perfect for gifting, all while being made in the United States,” said Ekrem Dimbiloglu, director, uniforms.
