Delta Air Lines started testing free in-flight internet access last month.
The airline rolled out limited free WiFi to all passengers on 55 of its short-, medium- and long-haul domestic flight segments over a two-week period. The WiFi access allows for internet browsing, checking emails, online shopping, social media use and messaging, but wasn’t enough to allow for more demanding services like audio and video streaming.
“Customers are accustomed to having access to free Wi-Fi during nearly every other aspect of their journey, and Delta believes it should be free when flying, too,” said Ekrem Dimbiloglu, director of onboard product, Delta Air Lines. “Testing will be key to getting this highly complex program right – this takes a lot more creativity, investment and planning to bring to life than a simple flip of a switch.”
The routes offering the service changed daily. Passengers were alerted via email and the Fly Delta app if their flight was part of the trial.
In 2017, Delta started offering free mobile messaging on its flights.
