The Asian cruise industry is experiencing double-digit growth, driven by strong demand from China, according to a new report from the Cruise Lines International Association.

The Asia Cruise Trends study shows cruise lines welcomed approximately 1.4 million Asian passengers in 2014, representing a 34 per cent annual growth since 2012.

The rate of growth of Chinese passengers increased 79 per cent since 2012, with 697,000 passengers taking to the high seas in 2014. The number of Chinese passengers is almost equivalent to the number of passengers from all other Asian markets combined (701,000).

“It is exciting that, for the first time, we know the true size of Asian source markets and have been able to extend our understanding of Asia’s cruise industry growth and potential,” said Adam M. Goldstein, global chairman, CLIA.

Cruises in the region visit more than 168 ports across 18 countries. Japan offers the most port calls this year with 646, followed by Malaysia (580), South Korea (377) and Thailand (374).

“2015 will be a record-breaking year in Asia with more travellers cruising the region than ever before. The cruise industry is responding by offering more cruises with experiences tailored to Asian travellers as well as enticing international travellers with an easy way to visit Asia’s array of fascinating destinations,” continued Goldstein.
