British Airways is the first airline to trial fully autonomous, electric mobility vehicles at an airport in North America. The vehicles allow passengers who typically require additional assistance to navigate airport terminals freely and independently and take the place of a traditional pushed wheelchair. The trial comes as British Airways expects the number of passengers in need of such amenities to increase by 10 percent by 2021.
The vehicles are exclusively trialed at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The vehicles feature anti-collision technology and navigate their way through the terminal after receiving destination information from the passenger. Vehicles take travelers from check-in directly to their boarding gate. Once there, the empty vehicles return to their docking stations.
“Our customers tell us they would like greater independence and control over their journey through the airport, so we were keen to trial autonomous devices and see our customers response to the very latest mobility technology in a real airport environment,” said Ricardo Vidal, head of innovation, British Airways. “Over the next few months we will be collaborating on a further trial at our busy home hub at Heathrow Terminal 5 to gather more feedback and explore the introduction of this technology alongside our team of customer service professionals to provide a truly seamless and accessible airport experience.
