Embark on a new, self-guided augmented reality walking tour across Boston landmarks shining a light on the city’s Indigenous history. The new tour, created by White Snake Projects, was developed in partnership with North American Indian Center of Boston.

The app tour begins at Boston Harbor Islands Pavilion on Long Wharf and ends on Boston Common, tracing Indigenous history through six stops in downtown Boston, from the internment of Native peoples on Deer Island during King Philip’s War to the hanging of Nipmuc leader Tantamous from the Great Elm in 1676.

Each stop on the 1.2-mile trail features a written narrative and an original, three-minute music performance inspired by and/or about the historical event that took place there. Each narrative and performance was crafted by Native creators. The trail also includes new, original music and lyrics by Wampanoag, Nipmuc and other Native American artists living in Massachusetts.

Stop 1: Deer Island

The first stop shares the history of Deer Island in Boston Harbor, where between 500 and 1,100 Indigenous “Praying Indians” during King Philip’s War either died, were sold into slavery or forced from their homes.

Stop 2: Faneuil Hall

The second stop, Faneuil Hall, details how Peter Faneuil used proceeds from the slave trade (which included the enslavement of Native Americans) to fund construction of the hall. This stop explores the Native and African enslavements that preceded and built Boston, as well as the archaeology of Faneuil Hall.

Stop 3: Boston Massacre Site, Old State House

Crispus Attucks, an Afro-Indigenous man, was the first casualty of the American Revolution, and he became an enduring symbol of resistance to British tyranny and an early hero of American liberty.

Stop 4: The Phips Bounty Proclamation, Old State House

This proclamation placed a cash bounty on Penobscot scalps, reflecting a larger, systemic effort to drive Indigenous populations off their lands during the Seven Years’ War.

Stop 5: Odeon Theatre Site

In 1836, Pequot activist William Apess delivered his eulogy on King Philip here, marking one of the most radical acts of Indigenous oratory in American history.

Stop 6: Boston Common, The Great Elm

Standing until 1876, this massive tree was used for Puritan-era hangings, including Native Americans during King Philip’s War. In 1675, the Massachusetts General Court enacted the Indian Exclusion Act, banning Indigenous residents from living within Boston city limits.

The trail is available through Dec. 31. The app is available for iOS and Android devices, and is also available here.

Get an Insider’s Look at Napa Valley’s Busiest Season

If you haven’t been to wine country during harvest season, have you really been to wine country? Vineyards buzz with workers plucking sun-ripened clusters while the winery hums with sorting tables and presses gently extracting precious juice and tannins. In the cellar, the air is perfumed with an intoxicating cuvée of baking bread and grapes as vats alive with bubbling juice are tended to by the winemaker’s watchful eyes. For wine lovers, the experience is nothing short of magical. It also offers a newfound appreciation to the hard work behind every bottle in a way that simply bellying up to a tasting bar never could. Napa Valley has perfected the art of the harvest celebration with festivals, dinners, tastings, hands-on experiences and, of course, the opportunity to literally feel grapes between your toes.
