Must-have travel accessories! Don’t leave home without this! The only gadget you’ll ever need! I receive press releases with headlines like this every day. Occasionally, the product is interesting. More often, I’m left wondering who’d want the scarf that doubles as a dress, beach cover, umbrella, cooking utensil — you get the drift. Beyond that, I’m amazed there are people out there who have room to fit a universal air freshener into their luggage when I’m struggling to fit clothing for three days of business meetings into my regulation-sized carry-on bag. Most recently, I received a pitch for “state-of-the-art travel must haves … that make travel easier and more comfortable for thousands every day.” Apparently, many of my fellow travelers can’t live without LEA, “the world’s first waterless aroma diffuser” — a cordless and rechargeable device for freshening “dank hotel rooms” — or Jerry, “a truly portable humidifier” that’s super slim and works with a standard water bottle. To each his or her own. I’m sure some of my fellow travelers will swear to the benefits of both these products and the myriad other travel gadgets on the market. LEA retails for $119.99. I think I’ll light a candle instead. Jerry sells for $49.99. I think I’ll keep myself hydrated by drinking plenty of water rather than worry about the humidity in my hotel room.
