Fill Your Heart with Ireland

by Chris Sager

Feb 4, 2019

Last Tuesday, Global Traveler publisher and CEO Francis X. Gallagher and I attended the kick-off event for Tourism Ireland’s new ad campaign, Fill Your Heart with Ireland. We arrived well before the start of the event to interview Brendan Griffin, Ireland’s Minister of State for Tourism & Sport. It was great to hear from Minister Griffin about all that got him where he is today, as well as all the things ahead for the great country of Ireland — keep a lookout for the interview in Global Traveler.

Held at Hearst Tower in New York, the impressive venue, packed with attendees, offered a scenic view from the 44th floor across downtown New York City. True to Ireland, it was a cold and rainy night, but the live music from an Irish band provided an appropriate backdrop as all took their seats. The event started with a statement from Minister Griffin explaining the inspiration for the campaign and why we should all look forward to what Ireland has in store for 2019.

The campaign focuses on portraying Ireland as more than just a destination on your bucket list. The goal is to get people to feel what Ireland is like firsthand by taking in and experiencing the small cultural details that define the country — visit one of the endless pubs and make time to speak with some welcoming locals or walk across the picturesque grass plains to stand on the sea cliffs. Whether you travel on business or vacation, alone or with company, make sure to soak everything in because there’s no shortage of destinations and activities. Part of what I found interesting is the country’s promotion of its on-screen scenery. From Game of Thrones to Star Wars, many famous television and movie scenes filmed in Ireland, and they encourage you to visit these destinations that allow you to get a truly immersive, first-hand experience.

Overall, it was nice to get a look into the under-the-radar things Ireland has to provide its tourists. One can even take a look on their website for suggestions on trip ideas, things to do and accommodations for its many historic cities. So for anyone considering a trip overseas, I’d suggest making a stop on the vast green island to Fill Your Heart with Ireland.

Mindfulness City in Kingdom of Bhutan Unveiled as Future Economic Hub

In front of an audience of 30,000 Kingdom of Bhutan residents and officials, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck presented his vision for a new economic hub in Bhutan. Located between India to the south and China to the north, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Bhutan came late to global tourism. It opened its borders to international visitors in 1974 and, while tourism definitely increased, residents are enduring “light” rush-hour traffic in Thimphu, its capital city, as the only Asian capital without traffic lights.

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
