Corporate History and Memory

by Kate Gallagher

Sep 12, 2011

The tenth anniversary of 9/11 reminds me of corporate history and memory. Although Global Traveler is eight years old, our corporate history and memory predate that. The Editor in Chief, Lisa Matte, and I were actively involved in business travel and luxury travel marketing at the time of 9/11. We continued past the tragedy and looked forward to the future. I think this sets us apart from others in the marketplace. If you log onto websites of competing media, you will note very little listed or available about their past, as there is none to give. Their past has been erased, disregarded and not of economic value to the current flavor of the week. Every industry has opportunists, and I am all for those wanting to earn a profit, but there seems to be an unabashed disregard for the past from these publications. We were there during 9/11, traveling and encouraging the return to travel. We were the people traveling on the first anniversary of 9/11 and reporting to the industry and travelers. I think our tribute yesterday — blocking the Global Traveler website with a memorial to 9/11 — is an indication of our difference. We sent an eFlyer USA e-blast with our memories of the ten-year-old 9/11 event. The entire staff of GT spent a great deal of time to get our tribute right. Our competitors: nothing — it was like every other day — there was no profit to be made by this action. When the World Trade Center was first attacked in February 1993, I spoke to my colleague Dorothy Adler in the UK. I had talked to her just the day before about terrorist attacks in London, and I had said to her, “We don’t understand the impact these attacks have, this doesn’t happen here.” “How quickly things change,” I thought the next day. Dorothy reminded me of my comment. Thanks for following as we continue to report to you about business travel and luxury travel while being able to link the past, present and future. — Fran Gallagher, publisher and CEO
