It’s the summer of comics at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago! The newest exhibition, Chicago Comics: 1960s to Now, highlights Chicago’s role as a center for comics and cartooning.

Running through Oct. 3, Chicago Comics: 1960s to Now traces the evolution of comics in Chicago. Comics grew from simple panels on the funny pages to long-term storytelling, political statements, critiques and more. Artists progressed from using comics as forms of entertainment to tools of engagement with readers on relevant issues.

More than 40 cartoonists are represented including Lynda Barry, Kerry James Marshall and Chris Ware. Their works are shown in comics, graphic novels, ‘zines, drawings, dioramas, films, books and other forms of media. There is a special emphasis on the work of women and BIPOC comic artists.

Dedicated to the late Chicago native cartoonist Gary Leib, the exhibition is designed by Chicago-based contemporary architecture studio Norman Kelley. The space is designed to make visitors feel like they are in a comic strip. The arrangement has the visitors seeing the exhibits as if looking through the panels of a comic strip.

Complementing this MCA exhibition is Chicago: Where Comics Came to Life at the Chicago Cultural Center. It covers the history of comics in Chicago from 1880–1960. It also runs through Oct. 3.
