A Lesson in Dressin’

by Kate Gallagher

Sep 13, 2010

Do we have any idea when to look like a slob and when it is appropriate not to look like a slob? During the weekend, I am the first person to dress down and work around the house in old shorts and a tee shirt. Our office is quite casual — we seldom receive visitors, so anything goes. But when we go to meetings, we dress appropriately. For example, I flew last Tuesday to Finland on Finnair. I was shocked by some of the attire worn by my seatmates in business class. One guy had on shorts, and not very nice ones, and a Phillies windbreaker. Hey, I have a 14-game Phillies ticket package and a Phillies windbreaker, but do I wear it on business class? He never took it off. It was also fun watching him lick his fingers as he ate his meal. This book can be judged by its cover! Another guy had on below-the-knee shorts and a t-shirt that looked like he had slept in it for a week — nice. So am I old-fashioned? Am I cramping their style? Maybe, but when traveling, — and perhaps new business travelers need to learn this lesson — you don’t always need to look like crap. I am not suggesting they need to wear suits or even blazers. A passenger can easily upgrade their easygoing identity and appearance by grooming and washing — yourself and your clothes. At GT, we have a policy for dress and attire when traveling, labeling it smart casual. It would be nice to see others adopt the same policy. I appreciate the design and effort of today’s first- and business-class cabins; however, premium travel is ruined when a soiled traveler adds their “touch” to the cabin. — Fran Gallagher, publisher and CEO
