The benefits of hotel rewards programs for frequent travelers go without saying — free WiFi, late checkouts, guaranteed rooms, and so on — but some are better than others.

Personal finance website WalletHub compared the 12 most popular hotel rewards programs using 21 metrics including point values, booking blackout dates and point expiration policies.

The overall best rewards program for travelers of all spending levels, according to WalletHub’s findings, is Wyndham Rewards, followed closely by The Ritz-Carlton Rewards, Best Western Rewards and Marriott Rewards.

Offering the most in rewards value at $13.65 for every $100 spent is La Quinta, followed by Wyndham at $13.30.

In terms of expiration, Best Western is the only major hotel chain whose reward points do not expire due to account inactivity. A majority of rewards program points expire after 18–24 months.

Other high rankings include InterContinental Hotels Group’s IHG Rewards Club for rewards value and perks; Starwood Preferred Guest for value and redemption options; World of Hyatt for geographic coverage of properties; and The Ritz-Carlton for perks and policies.

Not all hotel companies performed well in every category, though. For example, Hilton, IHG and SPG scored lower for point expiration time, and The Ritz-Carlton and IHG scored low for ease of achieving top membership status.
