Going on two years after its initial planned opening in 2011, the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is still experiencing delays. Airport officials acknowledged last week, the facility will not meet the most recently announced target opening date of October 2013 and they are reluctant to announce a revised target.

Airport CEO Hartmut Mehdorn is helming an action plan, dubbed SPRINT, to get the project back on track. In a press conference last week, Mehdorn said: “We are making a fresh start in various parts of the organization. This entails changes with regard to personnel as well as processes to accelerate the opening of BER.“

The action plan coordinates all aspects of remaining construction into a series of 20 to 30 modules with an appointed manager for each module. The plan also incorporates training to ensure operational readiness when the facility opens.

“It is the right decision to set the course for a swift opening of BER,” said Matthias Platzeck, the state premier of Brandenburg and chairman of the airport’s supervisory board.
