New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport is installing 19 automated Transportation Security Administration screening lanes by the end of the month.

The automated lanes, 17 of which were recently opened at Newark International Airport, improve passenger screening efficiency by 30 percent. United Airlines passenger use the Newark lanes, while Delta Air Lines and American Airlines underwrote the JFK lanes.

The improved screening technology was first installed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. The TSA previously announced plans to add equipment to 21 of the busiest airports in the United States.

“As we have seen with recent attacks around the world, terrorists are increasingly targeting public spaces with large crowds of people to inflict the maximum number of casualties and anything we can do to reduce that target is a good thing,” said Rep. John Katko, chair of a House Homeland Security subcommittee.

The lanes have large countertops designed to hold more passenger bins and conveyor belts that move bins into the x-ray machine, and then return them to the front of the line for passenger use.

While the machines get passengers through security more quickly, the added efficiency hasn’t translated into the need for fewer TSA agents.
