A new edition of Google’s annual Mapping Thanksgiving study uses data from Thanksgiving 2017 to project the busiest travel times, when travelers should depart and much more.
The study focuses on when people from across the United States used Google Maps to find directions to different destinations. It breaks down the best times to leave for travel to one’s final destination and includes analysis for the weekend following Thanksgiving.
Nationally, from the Wednesday preceding Thanksgiving through the Friday following, outlet malls were the most Googled destination. The study also provides a tool that allows users to see the searches in their specific state. For example, in Pennsylvania, electric vehicle charging stations were the most prevalent searches.
The study goes on to break down when varying destinations were busiest surrounding Thanksgiving. According to the study, bakeries and liquor stores tend to be busiest between noon and 4 p.m. the day before Thanksgiving, while movie theaters and shopping centers get busy on the Friday following Thanksgiving.
According to the study, major cities experience much heavier traffic than a typical day on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The other noticeable national bump comes on the following Sunday, as families look to return home.
The study allows users to input their location and find optimal travel times for Thanksgiving.
