The iconic, long-distance Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has a new sponsor: Wildbirch Hotel in Anchorage, Alaska. The city’s first boutique lifestyle hotel (a JdV by Hyatt property) islocated in the West Fourth Avenue Corridor overlooking the race’s ceremonial starting line in what’s known as Anchorage’s “Mushing District.” In case you aren’t up to speed on sled dog racing or its unique vocabulary, “mushing” refers to the process of dog-powered transport dating back roughly to 6,000 B.C.E., while “mushers” are the drivers of the sleds, carts and devices pulled by said dogs.
“We are honored to announce this formal partnership with the Iditarod® and our sponsorship of the 2026 race,” said Patrick Faas, general manager, Wildbirch Hotel. “This is an iconic event steeped in rich Alaska history; it’s part of the very fabric of our neighborhood, and we are pleased to support the effort in keeping this special occasion true to its traditions.”
Race-related festivities include themed food and beverages at the hotel’s Crimson restaurant, rooms with views of the starting line, and meet-and-greets with mushers competing in the upcoming 54th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The Ceremonial Start takes place in downtown Anchorage on March 7 when mushers set off along 4th Avenue and D Street in three-minute intervals beginning at 10:30 a.m. The array of related events will include a performance from the Kingikmiut Singers and Dancers, who share traditional Inupiat songs and dances from Wales, Alaska.
The next day, the challenging 1,000-mile race to Nome officially begins at Willow Lake, approximately 50 miles north of Anchorage. This timed restart marks the moment mushers and their sled teams set off across the wilds of Alaska’s frozen rivers and jagged mountains. Book now to reserve a room at Wildbirch Hotel with a view of the preceding ceremonial race start.
The property’s local vibe ambience features a number of stunning on-site murals commissioned by local Native artists, and art exhibits curated in partnership with Smithsonian-affiliated Anchorage Museum. The hotel is located a short stroll from restaurants, cultural attractions and historic sites that include the Alaska Railroad Depot and Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

Please enjoy the Wave Issue, our cruising special for the first half of 2026. Cruising is booming, and travelers cannot get enough of it. I just returned from a fantastic trip on Regent Seven Seas Mariner with a group of Globility Board members and other Global Traveler subscribers. We departed from İstanbul and made our way through the Dardanelles Strait, connecting the Sea of Marmara to the Aegean. From there we entered the Mediterranean. The ship made interesting stops in Greece, Montenegro and Croatia before docking in Trieste. Please read my GT Tested review of Seven Seas Mariner in this issue.
